Welcome to High Country Local First.
How It Works
High Country Crime Stoppers relies on cooperation between local law-enforcement, the media, and the community to provide a flow of information about crime and criminals. Tips can be submitted by telephone, this website, or text messaging.
If you submit a tip by telephone, the calls are received at the Watauga County and Avery County Crime Stoppers tips-line phone. This phone is a dedicated Crime Stoppers phone which allows you to remain anonymous. The law enforcement dispatcher receiving the information makes notes and gives the caller an ID number. The caller provides a unique ID to the dispatcher to be used to reference the caller when a reward is paid. The information and tipster ID number is then passed on to an investigating officer.

Lastly, you may text a tip. To do this, send a text to CRIMES (274637) - The body of the text should be "NCTIP plus your tip". (Click to Watch a Text-A-Tip Demonstration Video)
By guaranteeing a caller’s anonymity Crime Stoppers allows the caller to give information in a positive atmosphere without the prospect of retribution. By offering cash rewards for information leading to indictment or arrests, the program encourages otherwise reluctant callers to provide information.
The High Country Crime Stoppers program is funded by private donations and fund-raising by concerned citizens and businesses . NO TAX DOLLARS ARE INVOLVED. A community board of directors, made up of persons from the High Country meets on a monthly basis to evaluate arrests and to decide on the size of rewards to be paid . Rewards are then distributed in a private manner to the callers. Callers are eligible for rewards up to $1,000, but, despite this, some callers choose not to collect their rewards.
